How Financial Advisors Get Recommended by ChatGPT

What ChatGPT reads before it names an advisor, what it cited in our Texas study, and how a Houston wealth manager came up first in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode.

ChatGPT recommends the financial advisors its sources back up. When we asked it about financial advisors and wealth managers in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin in October 2026, it cited NerdWallet in 11 of its 16 answers. Google AI Mode cited NerdWallet in none of its 15 and cited Google Business Profiles in 13. So 6AI works on two things: a firm's place on the sources each engine reads, and a page for each situation its clients describe.

We're 6AI, and we do SEO, GEO, and AEO for financial advisors and RIAs. Below is what ChatGPT cited in our Texas study, why most advisory firms get left out, and what happened when a Houston wealth manager got a page for each situation its clients face. What ChatGPT reads when someone asks for an advisor

When someone asks ChatGPT for a financial advisor, it searches the web, reads a handful of pages, and names the firms those pages back up. In our study we asked “Who is the best financial advisor in Houston, Texas?”, the same for a wealth management firm, and the same for Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin. We asked each question twice on each engine, logged out. Here's what the advisor and wealth answers cited.

Selected sources from our Texas study, in answers about financial advisors and wealth management firms only. Counts are answers, not individual citations: each domain counts once per answer. Ads are excluded. October 23 and 24, 2026.

ChatGPT leaned on NerdWallet. Google AI Mode leaned on Google Business Profiles and never cited NerdWallet. SmartAsset came up on both, in 1 ChatGPT answer and 2 Google AI Mode answers. In our Austin study on October 20, 2026, the site ChatGPT's financial advisor answer cited most was napfa.org.

And the list moves. Across all 20 Texas questions, advisors and lawyers, we asked ChatGPT again 7 to 19 minutes later, and it named 38 of the 82 firms from its first answers again (46%). The two engines mostly named different firms, too: only 28 of the 127 firms ChatGPT named (22%) were also named by Google AI Mode for the same question. Being named once proves little. What counts is how often a firm is named, on which engine, and from which source.

Why most advisory firms get left out

A firm's own website was rarely the evidence. Across all 339 times a firm was named in the study, its own website was a cited source 17 times (5%). The website was shown 221 times (65%), so people could click through, but the evidence mostly came from other sites.

Advisory firms were named with few reviews. The 28 advisory and wealth firms Google AI Mode showed with a review count had a median of 24 Google reviews, and 11 had fewer than 20. The 40 law firms it showed with a count had a median of 238.

Most of the firms named were local. In advisor and wealth answers, 20 of 147 firm mentions (14%) went to national firms, such as Fisher Investments, Creative Planning, Savant Wealth Management, and Morgan Stanley.

In our work, a firm gets left out when it's missing from the sites an engine reads, when its listings and its site disagree, or when nothing on its site answers the question a client asked. A general services page gives an assistant little to quote when a widow, a new retiree, or an heir asks for help.

People ask about their situation

Our study asked the short question. The Houston questions we check for Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors, a 6AI client, are longer, and each one describes a situation. Post Oak came up first for these:

  • “Is there a financial advisor in Houston who works with widows?”, in Google AI Mode
  • “I'm going through a divorce in Houston. Is there a financial advisor for women in transition?”, in Google AI Mode
  • “Who manages investments for retirees in Houston with attention to downside risk and taxes?”, in ChatGPT (Temporary Chat) and Google AI Mode
  • “Which fee-based fiduciary advisors in Houston help with Medicare IRMAA and Roth conversion planning?”, in ChatGPT (Temporary Chat)

None of them is just a job title and a city. They're about losing a spouse, a divorce, investing in retirement with taxes in mind, and Medicare IRMAA and Roth conversions.

Why niche pages win

An assistant can only cite a page that exists, and a page written for one situation answers that question better than a services page that lists everything. Widows, retirees, energy employees, and families after an inheritance each ask a different question, and a page for each gives an assistant an answer to cite.

Most of the answers above linked a page on the topic: the widows page we built, the firm's page for women after divorce, and, in ChatGPT, the investment management and retirement planning pages we built. Post Oak's expertise was already in its articles. The pages made it something an assistant could cite.

Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors, by date

Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors is a Houston wealth management firm. When we started, it was already found on Google in Houston, but when people asked ChatGPT who to hire, it named other firms. Its articles on widowhood, inheritances, and retirement were scattered, and no page brought a topic together.

On October 12, 2026, four guide pages went live: for widows, for people after an inheritance, for retirement planning in Houston, and for choosing a wealth manager. Each gathers the firm's own articles on one topic, and each went live after the firm approved it. On October 15, an investment management page went live. Here's what came back.

  • On Google, searched from Houston, “financial advisor for widows houston” went from no Post Oak page in the top ten on October 12 to the widows page we built in first place on October 16, and it was first again on October 23, with Google's AI Overview naming the firm first of six.
  • On October 23, 2026, asked from Houston, Google AI Mode listed Post Oak first for the widows, divorce, and investing questions above. For the widows question, its first source was the widows page we built. It also listed the firm first for a retiree from the energy industry, with the firm's page for energy employees as its first source.
  • On October 26, 2026, checked in ChatGPT (Temporary Chat), Post Oak was named first of five Houston firms for the investing question, on both asks, with a link to the investment management page we built. It was also named first of five for the IRMAA and Roth conversion question, with a link to the retirement planning page we built.

Each AI answer here is a single check on the date shown, and answers change between runs. The full record, with every source, is on the Post Oak project page.

Post Oak is a 6AI client. In our Texas study it was counted the same way as every other firm.

What 6AI does for advisory firms

Getting named takes more than one page. Someone has to ask the questions your clients ask on Google, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and other AI assistants, many times over. Then someone has to read every source under every answer and fix what turns up in your pages, listings, and reviews.

That's what we do. About every 72 hours, 6AI Analytics searches Google and asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and other AI assistants what your clients ask, and records who gets named and the sources the answers cite. The SEO, GEO, and AEO pros who built it make the changes it finds. Any change you ask for is made within 24 hours, most the same day, and you get a report every week.

Your marketing has to follow your compliance rules, so we draft every change, and your CCO approves it before it goes live (how that works).

Questions advisors ask about ChatGPT

Does ChatGPT recommend financial advisors?

Yes, by name. In our October 2026 study of four Texas cities, ChatGPT named 3 to 5 firms in every answer, advisors and lawyers alike. In its 16 answers about financial advisors and wealth managers, it cited NerdWallet in 11. The names change between asks, so being named is a rate over many asks, not a yes or no.

How does an RIA get recommended by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT names the firms its sources back up. In our Texas study, advisors and lawyers together, a firm's own website was a cited source in only 17 of the 339 times a firm was named. 6AI works on the sources the engines read and builds a page for each situation a firm serves, such as widows, retirees, or families after an inheritance. About every 72 hours, we check who Google, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and other AI assistants name.

Does ChatGPT use NerdWallet to choose financial advisors?

We can't see how ChatGPT decides, but we can count what it cites. In our October 2026 study of advisors and wealth managers in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, ChatGPT cited NerdWallet in 11 of its 16 answers. Google AI Mode cited it in none of its 15 and cited Google Business Profiles in 13.

Do financial advisors need hundreds of Google reviews to be named by AI?

No. In our Texas study, the 28 advisory and wealth firms Google AI Mode showed with a review count had a median of 24 Google reviews, 11 had fewer than 20, and the smallest count shown was 1. The 40 law firms it showed with a count had a median of 238. For an SEC-registered adviser, reviews and ratings fall under the Marketing Rule, so they go through compliance first.

What do people ask ChatGPT when they're looking for a financial advisor?

Some ask the short version, like the question in our Texas study: “Who is the best financial advisor in Houston, Texas?” Others describe their situation, like “Is there a financial advisor in Houston who works with widows?” A page about the situation gives an assistant something to cite for that second kind of question, which is why we build one for each situation a firm serves.
