How to Get Your Business Recommended by Google AI Mode

What Google AI Mode reads before it names a business, what it cited in our Austin and Texas studies, and businesses it listed first, with dates.

Getting recommended by Google AI Mode starts with what Google already holds about your business, led by your Google Business Profile. In our Austin study, Google AI Mode cited Business Profiles in 15 of its 20 answers. Pages that answer your customers' questions and listings that match your site give it more to cite.

We're 6AI, an AI SEO agency in Austin that does SEO, GEO, and AEO. This guide covers how Google AI Mode picks businesses, what it cited in our two studies, how it differs from ChatGPT and from AI Overviews, and businesses it listed first for our clients, with dates. How Google AI Mode picks businesses

Google AI Mode is the AI answer built into Google Search, for questions that need comparing, reasoning, or a follow-up. Ask it who to hire, and it searches Google's own index. It can run several related searches for one question, which Google calls query fan-out. Then it writes one answer that names a few businesses, often as cards with a rating and a link to the website, and shows the sources behind it.

Google's own guidance says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. So the same SEO work counts for Google and Google AI Mode, and that's why we run SEO, GEO, and AEO as one job.

Its evidence comes mostly from what Google already holds about a business. In both of our studies, the sources Google AI Mode showed were led by Google Business Profiles, then a few other sites, such as Reddit threads, Super Lawyers, and Thumbtack. A business's own website was rarely the source.

What Google AI Mode cited in our studies

We've run two studies of Google AI Mode next to ChatGPT. In our Austin study, on October 20, 2026, we asked about 20 kinds of Austin businesses, once each. In our Texas study, on October 23 and 24, we asked about financial advisors, wealth managers, and lawyers in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, twice each. Here is what Google AI Mode cited.

What we countedAustin studyTexas study
Google AI Mode answers20, one per category36, to 20 questions asked twice

Other sources it citedReddit threads in 3 answers, and Thumbtack in 2Super Lawyers in 9 of 21 lawyer answers, and Thumbtack in 5
Sites ChatGPT cited that Google AI Mode didn'texpertise.com (in 8 of ChatGPT's 20 answers), birdeye.com, and siftpros.comNerdWallet (in 11 of ChatGPT's 16 advisor and wealth answers) and bestlawyers.com (in 6 of its 24 lawyer answers)
A named business's own site as the cited source2 times, both in Google AI Mode, for the 171 businesses the two engines named4 times in Google AI Mode, of 17 across both engines, for 339 firm mentions
Businesses named per answer, on average4.65 (3 to 6)4.8 (2 to 8)
Source counts are answers, not individual citations, and ads are left out. Every ask was logged out. Austin: October 20, 2026. Texas: October 23 and 24, 2026.

Both studies point the same way. Google AI Mode leans on what Google already holds about a business, its Business Profile first, and a website on its own rarely does the convincing. That's why we work on your Business Profile and the listings in your field, along with your site. For law firms, we advise on directory profiles, bar listings, and reviews, since those belong to the firm. For SEC-registered advisers, reviews fall under the Marketing Rule, so your CCO approves them first.

ChatGPT and Google AI Mode name different businesses

Being named by one says little about the other. In our Austin study, only 20 of ChatGPT's 79 picks (25%) were also on Google AI Mode's list for the same question. In our Texas study, 28 of the 127 firms ChatGPT named (22%) were also named by Google AI Mode for the same question.

The sources differ too. Both engines cited Google, but past Google, ChatGPT leaned on directories, review sites, and roundups: expertise.com was in 8 of its 20 Austin answers and in none of Google AI Mode's, and NerdWallet was in 11 of its 16 Texas advisor and wealth answers and in none of Google AI Mode's.

So the work for each engine overlaps, but past Google, the sources differ. For ChatGPT on its own, read how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT. For how Google, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and the other AI assistants compare, read how to get recommended by AI.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of a regular Google results page. Google AI Mode is the full AI answer, where you can keep asking. Both draw on the same Google index, both can run query fan-out, and Google applies the same rule to both: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link.

They don't always agree. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show will vary. AI Overviews also don't show for every search.

The same work can show up in both. On October 23, 2026, in a search from Houston, the first firm Google's AI Overview named for “financial advisor for widows houston” was Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors, a Houston wealth management firm, and the widows page we built was the first result under it. That day, Google AI Mode listed Post Oak first for “Is there a financial advisor in Houston who works with widows?”, with the same widows page as its first source.

Ask again tomorrow, get a different list

Google AI Mode's answers move. In our Texas study, we asked it each question twice, a day apart. Of the 75 firms in its first answers, 43 came back the next day (57%). It named the same first firm in 4 of 16 questions, and it never gave the same list twice.

ChatGPT's lists moved more, even minutes apart. Asked again 7 to 19 minutes later, it named 38 of the 82 firms from its first answers again (46%).

So one answer is a snapshot. Whether Google AI Mode names you is a rate across many asks, and the only way to know yours is to keep asking your customers' questions and counting the answers.

Businesses Google AI Mode listed first

These are first places from our client work. Each one is a dated check, and none of the questions names the business. Each one is on the client's project page, under our projects, with its source.

Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors is a Houston wealth management firm. On October 23, 2026, searching from Houston, we asked Google AI Mode “Who manages investments for retirees in Houston with attention to downside risk and taxes?” It listed Post Oak first of three Houston firms. The same day, it listed the firm first for “Is there a financial advisor in Houston who works with widows?”, with the widows page we built as its first source. It also listed Post Oak first for “I'm going through a divorce in Houston. Is there a financial advisor for women in transition?”, linking the firm's page for women after divorce. Here's how Post Oak's first week went.

Entrepreneurial Stewardship of Austin (ESA) is an Austin entrepreneurship program. On October 22, 2026, ten days after we took on its SEO, GEO, and AEO, we asked Google AI Mode “Which Austin programs teach entrepreneurship with real business cases and Socratic discussion?” It recommended ESA first and named no other program, on both asks, citing ESA's homepage and its Program page.

Court Vision is a basketball training business in Cedar Park, Texas. On October 26, 2026, searching from Cedar Park, we asked Google AI Mode “Which basketball trainers in Round Rock or Cedar Park work with high school players?” It named Court Vision first on both asks, and the second answer showed its place card and cited courtvisionskills.com as its first source.

Our study questions were broad, worded “Who is the best [category] in [city], Texas?” The checks above are specific, the way a customer with a real need asks. In four of these five checks, Google AI Mode cited a page on the business's own site as a source. In our studies, it did that only 2 times in Austin and 4 times in Texas. That's why we write a page for each question a business's customers ask.

How 6AI does it

We do the work that puts a business in Google's answers, then keep checking that it stays there. 6AI Analytics, the system we built, searches Google and asks ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and other AI assistants what your customers ask, about every 72 hours. It records who comes up first and the sources the answers cite. The SEO, GEO, and AEO pros who built it make the changes it finds.

Any change you ask for is made within 24 hours, most the same day. You get a report every week, and a client dashboard is rolling out to clients now. It's all part of our SEO, GEO, and AEO work for every client.

Questions about Google AI Mode

How do I get my business to show up in Google AI Mode?

Be the business Google's sources agree on. Google AI Mode answers from Google's own index, and in our two studies the source it cited most was the Google Business Profile. So the work is a complete Business Profile, listings that match your site, and pages that answer your customers' exact questions. Google says there are no additional requirements beyond showing in Google Search, so it comes down to SEO done well and checked against what the answers say. Our free AI visibility check shows whether Google AI Mode names you today, and who it names instead.

Does Google AI Mode use my Google Business Profile?

Yes, more than any other source we've seen it cite. In our Austin study, Google AI Mode cited Business Profiles in 15 of its 20 answers, and in 11 of those they were the only source. In our Texas study, it cited them in 22 of 36 answers, and in 13 of the 15 about financial advisors and wealth managers. Google also lists an up-to-date Business Profile among the basics for its AI features.

What's the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are the AI summaries at the top of a regular Google results page, and they don't show for every search. Google AI Mode is the fuller answer, for questions that need comparing, reasoning, or a follow-up. Both draw on Google's index and can run several related searches for one question. Google says they may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links they show will vary, which is why we check both.

How long until Google AI Mode recommends my business?

For a specific question, it can take days. The widows page we built for Post Oak Private Wealth Advisors went live on October 12, 2026. On October 23, 2026, asked about Houston advisors who work with widows, Google AI Mode listed the firm first, with that page as its first source. Broad questions, like who to hire in your city, can take longer.

Can I pay Google to be named in Google AI Mode?

No. You can buy ads, and Google AI Mode can show them in a sponsored block: in our Austin study, it showed one in 3 of its 20 answers. There's no fee or sign-up to be one of the businesses the answer itself names. That comes from what Google reads about you.
